Purpose: To learn about fossils and
their place in the evolution of the earth. Requirements: 1. Take a field trip to collect fossils. 2.
Make a display of the fossils you found. Describe to the group what they are and if
possible, the period from which they came. |

GEOLOGY AWARD
Purpose: To gain a basic knowledge of geology,
including rocks, minerals, and soil. Requirements: 1. Go on a rock hunt and attempt to identify
all the rocks you find. 2.
Name the soil types in you home county, stating their main
characteristics. |

INSECT AWARD
Purpose: To learn about different kinds
of insects and their impacts. Requirements: 1. Make a display box collection of at least
10 local insects, identifying by common and scientific name. 2.
Report on the benefits/harm of each to humans and/or the environment. |

Purpose: To learn how to care for a pet. Requirements: 1. Visit the Birmingham / Troy Animal
Control Dept. 2.
List the main steps in proper care for a pet. 3.

Purpose: To learn about different kinds
of reptiles and their natural habitats. Requirements: 1. Visit

and whether or not they are poisonous. |

Purpose: To learn about trees and the
valuable part they play in the earth’s life cycle. Requirements: 1. Find,
identify and collect the leaves of any 5 trees, such as Pine, Oak, Fruit,
Hickory and Elm. 2.
Write a paragraph about how trees fit into the earth’s natural life
cycle. |

Purpose: To learn about the different
kinds of weeds, how to identify them, and what harm they cause. Requirements: 1. List

our Native American tribes. Requirements: 1. Visit
a historical Native American site and learn the history of the tribe that

Take part in a Native American ceremony. c.
Sing two Native American songs in their own language and explain
their meaning. d.

a gun safety class. 2.
List the dangers of ammunition and explosives. 3.

Purpose: To learn and practice proper
safety measures in the home. Requirements: 1. List
and follow the proper procedure for using and storing flammable or poisonous
liquids and powders, matches, and medicine in your home. 2.
Learn five common causes of fire in the home, along with steps for
fire prevention. 3.
Using what you have learned, survey your
home and yard, including attic, basement and utility room and list any unsafe
conditions; with the help of your family, correct as many of these conditions
as you can. 4.
List the location and dates available for local disposing of common
paints, chemicals, and other hazardous wastes. 5.
With your family, plan and practice a fire drill. |

Demonstrate the proper method of sharpening a knife and an axe. 4.
Explain the importance of keeping the edges sharp. 5.
Make a tent peg with an axe using the contact method. 6.

Purpose: To learn basic safety around
water and ice. Requirements: 1. Show

is important to wear a life jacket in a boat. 3.
State why the buddy system is good to use whenever you swim, ice
skate or go boating. 4.
With a companion, tip a boat or canoe, stay with it and paddle 20
feet to shore while wearing the proper life jacket. 5.
Without going in the water yourself, use a towel, pole, rope, or
other object to help a tired swimmer. 6.
Demonstrate what to do if the ice is cracking under you. Describe a couple of ways to rescue someone
who has fallen through the ice. |

HOME REPAIRS AWARD
Purpose: To learn the basics of home
repair. Requirements: Do six of the following: 1.
Point out the location and state the function of electric fuses
and/or circuit breakers in your house. 2.
Install fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. 3.
List basic tools needed around the home. 4.
Lubricate drawer guides, windows and door hinges. 5.
Erect a shelf that will support a 25-pound weight. 6.
Repair a screen. 7.
Mend a piece of broken furniture. 8.
Replace furnace filters. 9.
Fix a squeaky step or board. 10.
Tighten drawer knobs or handles. 11.
Replace a pane of glass. 12.

craft. Requirements: Complete a leather project that requires
cutting and assembly. |

to prevent eye injuries, cuts and burns. 2.
Do any three of the following: a.
Say how to use, care for, and store the tools generally used in metal
work (drill, files, vise, ball-peen hammer, metal saw, tin saw, tin snips,
pliers, and soldering or welding equipment). b.
State how the properties of gold, silver, tin, copper, aluminum,
brass and pewter affect the choice of the metal you would use to make certain
articles. c.
Design and make a simple metal article requiring drilling, cutting,
and filing. Clean and polish the item. d.

Explain the process and the equipment that you used. 2.
Digital Cameras. a.
Use a digital camera to transfer (input and download) six printouts. b.

Purpose: To learn about cameras, both
still and motion picture. Requirements: 1. Tell
how a camera operates, including the flash. 2.

Direct and videotape a four-minute skit of your family, friends, or

Purpose: To learn how to use the
library. Requirements: 1. Obtain
your own library card. 2.
Learn how to use the library’s filing system to find a book. 3.
Read at least six books within a year. Dad must approve books. |

SEWING AWARD
Purpose: To acquire basic skills of
sewing by hand and machine. Requirements: 1. Make
two of the following items: tea towel, blouse, four napkins, four place mats,
tablecloth, skirt, or something for your club. 2.
Collect items for a personal sewing box. Include scissors, pins, needles, thread,
tape measure, pincushions and thimble. |

WOODWORKING AWARD
Purpose: To develop skill using basic
woodworking tools and to apply this training to craft projects. Requirements: Develop a woodworking project. Draw a plan of it and together approve it
as suitable for the woodworking award.
Some sample projects are a shoeshine box, birdhouse, small table, or
shoe shelves. Use at least five
different tools. Describe the safety
precautions necessary for using these tools.
Put your completed project into use. |

Purpose: To learn basic swimming skills
and water safety. Requirements: 1. State the principles of water safety. 2.
Demonstrate the survival float for 3 minutes. 3.
Tread water for one minute in deep water using a scissors kick.
4.
Swim the front crawl for 20-25 yards. 5.
Swim the back crawl continuously for 20 - 25 yards. 6.
Demonstrate turning from a front crawl to a back crawl, going to a
back float, and then turning from a back crawl to a front crawl. 7.
Perform a front dive. |

INTERMEDIATE SWIMMING AWARD (Through Birmingham Y)
Purpose: To learn more advanced swimming
skills and water safety. Requirements: 1. Earn the Beginner Swimming Award. 2.
Demonstrate the survival float for six minutes. 3.
Tread water for several minutes and demonstrate the breaststroke kick
plus two additional treading kicks. 4.
Do the breaststroke, kick for 50 yards. 5.
Demonstrate a butterfly kick for 20 yards. 6.
Swim the elementary backstroke for 50 yards. 7.
Swim the front crawl for 50 yards with rotary breathing. 8.
Swim the back crawl for 50 yards. 9.
Demonstrate the following sequence: swimming on front, turning, swimming
on back, treading water, and then, continuing to swim. 10.
Perform a front dive from a standing position on a one-meter diving
board. |

ADVANCED SWIMMING AWARD (Through Birmingham Y)
Purpose: To develop swimming endurance
and survival water safety skills. Requirements: 1. Earn the Intermediate Swimming Award. 2.
Demonstrate the survival float for 6 minutes. 3.
Know personal health issues related to pool use. 4.
Swim the butterfly stroke for 50 yards. 5.
Demonstrate the breaststroke. 6.
Swim 200 yards using a combination of the butterfly stroke, back
crawl, breaststroke, and front crawl continuously and in sequence (the
individual medley). Execute strong
push-offs at the ends of the pool. 7.
Demonstrate open turns without stopping between strokes. 8.
Cover at least three or four body lengths swimming entirely
underwater, using a breaststroke or a combination stroke. 9.
Perform extension assists. |

the principles of bicycle safety. 2.

Purpose: To become exposed to rowing
and to learn boating safety. Requirements: 1. State
the principles of boating safety. 2.
Demonstrate the use of safety equipment. 3.
Identify the different parts of a rowboat. 4.
Identify and explain the use of the equipment necessary to row a
boat. 5.
Demonstrate the ability to row in a straight line for a distance of
100 feet. 6.
Demonstrate the ability to turn right and left and to back up. 7.
Demonstrate proper docking. |

Purpose:
To encourage the practice of
sportsmanship and fair play. Requirements: 1. As a Dad/Child pair,
choose a team sport. Learn and
discuss the rules. 2.

another club, and play at least one game keeping score, practicing good
sportsmanship and fair play. |

the principles of water and boating safety. 2.
